A short walk, particularly suitable for people with children. It is all on paved paths. There are no steps and the entire walk is fairly level.

2 Mill Ponds LNR 2.75Km

Sections 1,2,4,5

Marine Gardens and then through Mill Ponds Local Nature Reserve. On a short visit in December I listed 11 species of birds. There can be many more depending on season.

This is a pleasant stroll and not too taxing. It is all on paved paths. There is a railway foot bridge at Barn Halt on Taylors Avenue but this can be avoided by following the footpath up round a horshoe bend over the road bridge.

3 Highway to Health 3.5Km

Things to do and see.

These may involve a short detour but the map will allow you to exercise your freedom in choosing which of these you want to visit.

Railway Station opened on 1 October 1862. Steam trains operated by the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland include Carrickfergus in their Excursions.

De Courey Centre. This is the large white building near the start. The exit at Iceland takes you to Antrim Street.

Carrickfergus Museum and Civic Centre. The museum is not huge but is still worth a visit. Here you will also find the Tourist Information shop.

Marine Gardens contains the Carrickfergus War Memorial and a great playground.

Courtyard Coffee House and Courtyard Gifts Near the far end of the Marine Gardens, in Scotch Quarter.

Mauds Ice Creams Also near the far end of the Marine Gardens, in Scotch Quarter.

Carrickfergus Castle Besieged in turn by the Scottish, Irish, English and French, the castle played an important military role until 1928 and remains one of the best preserved medieval structures in Northern Ireland. All three walks pass by here.

Mill Ponds a Local Nature Reserve. Walks 2 and 3 pass through here.
